About the CPAC Meetings
Attending the Cleveland Parent Advisory Council General meetings the last Tuesday of every month in the Cleveland school library is a great way to be informed and involved in your children's school experience and community while connecting with other parents. Meetings are usually 2 hours, and are informative and organized while informal. The CPAC Executive and both the Cleveland Principal and Vice-Principal attend and a teacher designate provides a brief overview of the classroom happenings. Often meetings include relevant and requested presenters. Class reps attend the meetings and can act as a resource for other parents unable to attend. All Parents are encouraged and welcome to attend the next CPAC meeting. If you have an item that you would like to raise at a meeting please contact the PAC Chair(s) in advance of the meeting to have your item included on the agenda. |

Our April Guest Speaker
Family Therapist, Colleen Drobot came to our April CPAC meeting to speak briefly about the developmental paradigm of Dr. Gordon Neufeld. Colleen has worked with Dr. Neufeld for many years and uses his approach in her private counselling/parent consulting practice as well as in her presentations to parents and educators. Dr. Neufeld is a leading international authority on child development and the role that secure child/parent relationships play in the maturation, learning and socialization of children. Colleen Drobot will speak about how the developmental model differs from the cognitive and behavioural approaches to raising children. She will outline how this approach, based on attachment theory, cultivates the conditions needed to help children adapt and become resilience, have impulse control leading to moral development and social responsibility, and helps children mature into separate individuals with goals, passions, and sense of responsibility in life. She will also briefly outline a variety of presentations she offers to parents and professionals.
About Dr. Neufeld and his approach
Dr. Neufeld is a developmental psychologist with over 40 years of experience working with children, youth and the adults responsible for them. He is a leading international authority on child development and the role that secure child/parent relationships play in the maturation, learning and socialization of children. His work focuses on the importance of the adult/child relationship. His book Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers, brought international attention to the crucial role that attachment issues play in the development of children.
We are currently witnessing the tragic consequences of the loss of this healthy child/adult attachment—consequences that include increased anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, aggression, bullying, the formation of gangs or cliques at school, drug addiction, and suicide. Dr. Neufeld’s translates his theoretical framework for understanding child development (and the role of attachment) into accessible, readily available models, which have brought his developmental paradigm alive for countless numbers of parents, educators, medical professionals, child care workers and their respective agencies. Neufeld's model sheds light on the most urgent needs of our children today, and empowers parents and people who care about children to take action that will result in healthier children and a saner society.
